It is October, the time of year when nature arouses all of our senses, making it the perfect time for contemplating and celebrating life. Leaves turn vibrant colors and crunch under our feet. Once on the ground their life will be absorbed by the soil and other organisms awaiting nourishment, giving the earth that distinctive smell only autumn can bring. Breathe deeply and enjoy.
As days become a bit shorter and colder look within; are there any old habits that you could allow to fall away and “leave” behind? Is it time for you to change your colors, too? New Year’s resolutions made now should be perfected by the time January first rolls around. If you are feeling the need to change now is the time to re-arrange. Stop – Look – Listen – Smell – Taste – Feel. What is your soul whispering to you? Do it!
If you have a back yard with leaves covering the ground consider yourself blessed. This is the perfect opportunity for some family fun. If you have small children make some paths for them to traipse through either on foot, on tricycle, bicycle, or even those battery operated cars. At the ends of the leaf paths make some leave piles. Each child can have his or her own house. Make sure to make some piles and places for children to hide in the leaves and then pop out. You must always act surprised when they do. When everyone is finished playing come inside to get warm and drink some apple cider. Is there a better way to spend a crisp, clear autumn day?
Maybe, my children are all in their teens now and even though they still love playing in the leaves we can do even more things now that they are older. Recently we went horseback riding to the top of a tall, tall hill and looked down over the colorful valley. Last year we went canoeing. Whatever your preference – just get outside and enjoy life and this beautiful creation we call earth.
