Think in Terms of One Day's Resolutions Not One Year's

The start of a new year always brings about:  soul searching, reaching, climbing, and thoughts of changing the way we did things last year.  It also brings:  hope, expectation, optimism, and possibility.

As we begin filling in our crisp and clean calendars we are all wishing at some level for change.  This is the way the Great God of Heaven created us, so we would, "Go forth and prosper."  Thomas A. Edison tells us, "If we did all of the things we are capable of doing we would astound ourselves."  And Jesus himself tells us, with the faith the size of a tiny, tiny mustard seed we can tell a huge and enormous mountain to throw itself into the sea and it shall be done.

Really?  Really.  The world we live in today does not normally think on this level of believing.  It seems skepticism starts secretly seeping into our very souls from the minute we are born.  We are told things like, "no" and "you can't" among many other words that stop us in our tracks.   And the mountain on the horizon wanes larger and larger.

Do you have a mountain to climb or move?  Everyone does.  It could be learning a new language, finally having an organized home, or losing enough weight to make you feel healthier and stronger.  Let's take a step and begin to plant the tiny seed of faith into the gardens of our lives.  Notice I said a step.  Only one step.  Remember the old saying, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step."  

The first step that we must all take is to believe in ourselves.  Think for a moment about the wondrous miracle every tiny seed contains within its shell.  Life.  That same miracle is encased inside the ideas and goals you are dreaming about.  Some seeds blossom quickly.  Other more slowly.  Either way now is the time to believe in those ideas and dreams and make them a reality.  They are there for a reason - to spur you on, so you will  go forth and prosper.

Here are some ideas to help you take that first step in the right direction:

    1.  Dwell on positive affirmations each day.  Say them to yourself upon rising and before going to bed each night.

Example.  "I believe the world is plotting to do me good today.  I can't wait to see what it is."

Find some statements that excite you and get you motivated.  Write them down on your calendars and in your day planners so you will see them every day.

    2.  See yourself as you would be after your goal has been achieved.  Ask yourself, "How would I feel after I achieve this goal?"  Then begin to feel that way now.

    3.  Think about how your life would be different if when you woke up every morning you pretended to be the star of a big Hollywood film.  Would you really want millions of people seeing you in a bathrobe at noon?  Probably not, so get up and try looking and feeling your best. 

Truly, you don't have to pretend to be the star because you already are the leading lady in your own "real life" film.  You are not only the star but the writer and director as well.  What kind of role are you playing and producing each day?

    4.  Chunk down your goals into small bite size pieces.  If you want to clean out your basement and it seems like it is the size of Mt. McKinley, agree to do this over the course of one month.  Start with only five minutes per day.  This may sound like you won't make any headway but you will be happily surprised by how much mountainous material you can move in only five minutes.  This will encourage you to work for longer intervals until by the end of the month your mountain/basement is clean and neat.

If you made the resolution to get healthy and fit this year make it happen by starting slowly.  You might start by replacing one can of soda pop for a glass of water, or a piece of candy with a pretzel and peanut butter. 

If you go slowly and build good habits you will be much more likely to achieve your goals.  Only 22% of Americans stick with their New Year's resolutions and achieve what they really want.  So don't be like the other 88% and fail.  Go slowly, thinking only of what you want to achieve today to create bigger results in the future, and this will be your most prosperous year yet.

    5.  Finally, forgiving and forgetting all the wrongs and failures that you may have committed this past year and all of the years gone by is a must.  This is a new year and a new you.  Move on.
